Definitely!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is there a better, faster and more cost-effective way to do this? This directly&nbsp;<strong>affects&nbsp;<\/strong>the&nbsp;<strong>scanning&nbsp;<\/strong>itself, and we can capture less data where the part is clamped. In addition, making a specific fixture can also be very time- consuming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, there is a solution for this! Namely, we can&nbsp;<strong>fully digitally clamp\/de-warp a part<\/strong>. This allows us, for instance, to eliminate the influence of gravity, measure the parts as they would be in their assembled state (= most common), or straighten warped parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So with this post, we want to take a<strong>&nbsp;closer look at the functionality of virtual clamping<\/strong>&nbsp;in Zeiss Inspect, and how it offers a better alternative to physical fixtures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Disadvantages of a physical fixture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COST<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using a physical fixture can be expensive. On the one hand, it is very&nbsp;<strong>time consuming<\/strong>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<strong>design, create and validate<\/strong>&nbsp;a correct fixture. On the other hand, a fixture often has to be used and stored in a&nbsp;<strong>controlled environment<\/strong>. On top of this, there is also the&nbsp;<strong>cost of materials<\/strong>, and the entire cycle has to be repeated with each product modification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>USAGE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When using a fixture, some problems\/risks can occur. For example,&nbsp;<strong>repeatability&nbsp;<\/strong>is affected by the&nbsp;<strong>user&nbsp;<\/strong>and the&nbsp;<strong>order of clamping<\/strong>. The first is \u2018<strong>Voxelizer<\/strong>\u2019 and the second is \u2018<strong>Remove Warpage<\/strong>\u2019. Before using this tool, a few things are important:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We always need a\u00a0<strong>CAD-model<\/strong>. (Or a non-deformed mesh.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The part should be made of a\u00a0<strong>uniform material.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When we want to&nbsp;<strong>straighten an object<\/strong>, we need a&nbsp;<strong>CAD-file<\/strong>&nbsp;of the&nbsp;<strong>effective part.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we want to<strong>&nbsp;virtually assemble<\/strong>&nbsp;a part, we also need this for the&nbsp;<strong>receiving part.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Materials with&nbsp;<strong>variable stiffness,<\/strong>&nbsp;depending on direction, cannot be virtually clamped. When converting to voxels, we need to include some&nbsp;<strong>parameters<\/strong>, most of which are&nbsp;<strong>related&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>to the material<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Voxel size<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Density<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Young\u2019s modulus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poisson\u2019s ratio<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Along here you can see the result. This is what we call the&nbsp;<strong>deformation model,<\/strong>&nbsp;a&nbsp;<strong>Finite Element Method (FEM)<\/strong>&nbsp;volume that contains all the relevant structural mechanical properties of the part. This model is the basis for performing a de-warping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remove warpage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tetravision.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RPS-Points.avif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"738\" height=\"738\" src=\"https:\/\/tetravision.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RPS-Points.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1084\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tetravision.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RPS-Points.avif 738w, https:\/\/tetravision.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RPS-Points-300x300.avif 300w, https:\/\/tetravision.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RPS-Points-150x150.avif 150w, https:\/\/tetravision.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RPS-Points-650x650.avif 650w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 738px) 100vw, 738px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reference points:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The part must first be fixed in its 6<strong>&nbsp;degrees of freedom (DOF)<\/strong>. We do this&nbsp;<strong>based on<\/strong>&nbsp;6 (or more)&nbsp;<strong>reference points<\/strong>. Actually, here we make an&nbsp;<strong>alignment of the object<\/strong>&nbsp;based on these points. During de-warping, the object will not deform at these points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For our case, we use 7 points:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Point 1-4: Defines Z-plane<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>,Normally we would define this plane with 3 points but in this case the result became better when using 4 points. For this we usually use the&nbsp;<strong>mounting points<\/strong>&nbsp;of the object. Meaning; we will virtually \u201cmount\u201d the deformed object on the receiving part. This allows us to verify:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Whether the assembly is possible at all.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whether the dimensions are still within tolerance after assembly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whether there is no unwanted distortion in other locations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Should the part not be adequately clamped in the assembled state, we can still&nbsp;<strong>iterate&nbsp;<\/strong>to add additional clamping points. This allows us to determine where additional mounting points are needed to fit the part into its desired shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a&nbsp;<strong>major advantage of virtual clamping over physical fixturing.&nbsp;<\/strong>Namely, we can add additional clamping points&nbsp;<strong>quickly and virtually free of charge<\/strong>, whereas with a physical fixture this becomes time-consuming and costly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In our case, the 4 side planes must be drawn outward, since they are bent inward. So we indicate some points on these planes. Above you can already see many points iteratively added (you can see that by the numbering). We will always try to get a result with&nbsp;<strong>as few clamping points as possible.<\/strong>&nbsp;If not, we will add some points where we see that the clamping does not yet have the desired effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We pass these points into the de-warping tool as&nbsp;<strong>clamping points<\/strong>. At these points, the tool will thus try, in several iterations (max. 10), to bring the&nbsp;<strong>point lying on the mesh as close as possible to the current point on the CAD.<\/strong>&nbsp;In the process, the tool will also deform the environment around the point according to its&nbsp;<strong>material properties<\/strong>&nbsp;that we have previously given it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When we virtually clamp an object, we are not inconvenienced from all the possible disadvantages of a physical fixture.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We\u00a0<strong>do not need an individual fixture<\/strong>\u00a0per part to be stored.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We need to perform\u00a0<strong>only 1 measurement<\/strong>\u00a0instead of several (clamped and unclamped).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We can\u00a0<strong>quickly and efficiently\u00a0<\/strong>add or omit clamping points, promoting the iterative process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>repeatability\u00a0<\/strong>is very good because it is not affected by the user.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We can still
