Often such a seal is located inside the product and is<strong>&nbsp;not visible from the outside.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But how do you know if the seal is functioning properly? Does it seal effectively and behave as expected? Or is there any&nbsp;<strong>deformation<\/strong>&nbsp;causing&nbsp;<strong>gaps<\/strong>? This can lead to leakage or other undesirable behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CT scanning<\/strong>&nbsp;offers a solution here: it allows us to look inside the product and&nbsp;<strong>inspect<\/strong>&nbsp;and assess the&nbsp;<strong>seal<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>without having to open it<\/strong>. We illustrate this further with a scan of a plastic box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Black-and-white images<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The black-and-white images of the CT scan, similar to the X-ray images you know from the hospital, give us a clear picture of what is happening inside the product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the scan, the rubber on the inside is clearly visible. Each&nbsp;<strong>peak<\/strong>&nbsp;generally indicates a&nbsp;<strong>different material.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This allows us to distinguish, for example, between the rubber and the hard plastic. Black-and-white CT images are very valuable here, as they visually show whether there is a&nbsp;<strong>possible pathway inside<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can clearly see where the seal ring makes contact. When a&nbsp;<strong>gap<\/strong>&nbsp;is present, it can also be&nbsp;<strong>accurately measured<\/strong>.&nbsp;In the example along here, the rubber touches the edges on the right side and bottom. On the left side and top again, the size of the opening can then be measured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we&nbsp;<strong>zoom in<\/strong>&nbsp;sharply, you can see the&nbsp;<strong>resolution<\/strong>&nbsp;of the scan. This scan was performed with a<strong>&nbsp;voxel size&nbsp;<\/strong>of&nbsp;<strong>0.04 mm.<\/strong>&nbsp;As a rule of thumb,&nbsp;<strong>at least 2.5 to 3 voxels<\/strong>&nbsp;are needed to&nbsp;<strong>reliably&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>measure<\/strong>&nbsp;a&nbsp;<strong>gap<\/strong>. In this case, that means we can measure openings as small as 0.1 mm.
