We discuss common&nbsp;<strong>standard tools<\/strong>&nbsp;available in most software packages and delve deeper into developing highly&nbsp;<strong>specific inspections through scripting<\/strong>. Whether such custom solutions are necessary depends on the specifications of the component being analyzed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Standard porosity metrics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On the right-hand side, an example is shown of a defect that was segmented from a very high-resolution CT scan. To accurately characterize this defect, the software provides various standard metrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Volume<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 e.g. 0,0003496 mm\u00b3\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This speaks for itself and shows the volume of each individual defect. The drawback is that these usually involve very small values, which can be more difficult to interpret.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Equivalent Diameter<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 e.g. 0,087 mm\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This shows the diameter of a sphere with the same volume as the defect, and this number is somewhat easier to visualize.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Defect Diameter<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The smallest possible or enclosing sphere that fully contains the defect.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Compactness<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This shows the ratio of the defect\u2019s volume to the volume of the enclosing sphere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sphericity<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This shows the ratio of the surface area of the defect to the surface area of a sphere with the same volume.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tetravision.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025-05-05_13-58-37.avif\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"772\" height=\"763\" src=\"https:\/\/tetravision.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025-05-05_13-58-37.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1826\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tetravision.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025-05-05_13-58-37.avif 772w, https:\/\/tetravision.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025-05-05_13-58-37-300x297.avif 300w, https:\/\/tetravision.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025-05-05_13-58-37-768x759.avif 768w, https:\/\/tetravision.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025-05-05_13-58-37-650x642.avif 650w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 772px) 100vw, 772px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visualization of defect properties<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Each individual defect can be characterized using one or more of the available standard measurements. Most software packages also offer the ability to&nbsp;<strong>visually display this data in the form of a color plot<\/strong>. In such a plot, each defect is assigned a color based on its specific value within a selected metric, such as volume or sphericity. In the case of this manifold, a total of&nbsp;<strong>29.070 defects<\/strong>&nbsp;were found, of which&nbsp;<strong>116 are larger than 0.1 mm<\/strong>&nbsp;according to the specifications. According to the product specifications,&nbsp;<strong>additional parameters<\/strong>&nbsp;must be checked to ensure that the&nbsp;<strong>minimum wall thickness requirements<\/strong>&nbsp;are met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, in addition to the already available defect diameter, two additional distances are calculated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>smallest 3D distance between the defect and the inner wall<\/strong>\u00a0of the manifold<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>smallest 3D distance to the outer wall<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on this data,\u00a0<strong>rules can be applied to automatically evaluate<\/strong>\u00a0whether the material surrounding the defect still provides sufficient\u00a0<strong>structural integrity<\/strong>. To do this, a standard&nbsp;<strong>wall thickness plot<\/strong>&nbsp;is generated between the inner and outer walls of the manifold. These are very localized zones of excess material. The risk is that this material could detach during the use of the manifold and potentially cause problems elsewhere in the machine. According to the specifications, this dross must therefore not exceed a certain size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do this, we generate a<strong>&nbsp;type of roughness plot<\/strong>&nbsp;that maps the&nbsp;<strong>local peaks and valleys of the inner wall<\/strong>.
